What is an IE Code?

An Import Export Code – commonly known as IEC or IE Code – is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Every person or business entity that imports goods into India or exports goods from India is legally required to hold a valid IE Code.

The IE Code is not a tax registration or a licence in the traditional sense. It is an identity credential for international trade – the equivalent of a PAN card for your import-export business. It must be quoted on all customs documents, shipping bills, bills of lading, bank remittances related to foreign trade, and any other export or import-related documentation.

One of the most practical aspects of the IE Code is that once obtained, it is valid for the lifetime of the entity. It does not expire, does not need to be renewed annually, and is linked to the PAN of the applicant. A single IE Code covers all branches, divisions, and factory units of a business.

Who Needs an IE Code?

The IE Code requirement applies broadly across all types of entities engaged in international trade. If your business involves moving goods across India’s borders – in either direction – you need an IE Code before your first shipment.

Businesses exporting goods or services from India to any foreign country

Businesses importing goods or raw materials into India from any foreign country

Manufacturers who sell their products to foreign buyers directly or through an export house

Trading companies engaged in buying from Indian suppliers and selling to foreign buyers

• E-commerce sellers who ship products internationally through platforms like Amazon Global or Etsy

• Service exporters – including software companies, consultancies, and freelancers – who receive foreign remittances against services provided

• Individuals engaged in personal import or export of commercial quantities of goods

Proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs, private limited companies, public limited companies, trusts, and HUFs – all are eligible to obtain an IE Code. The type of entity does not restrict eligibility.

Why the IE Code is More Than Just a Formality

For many first-time exporters, the IE Code feels like just another registration checkbox. In practice, it is the single document that unlocks your access to international trade – and its absence creates very specific, very real problems.

Customs Clearance is Not Possible Without It

Every shipment that crosses an Indian border – inward or outward – must be accompanied by a valid IE Code on the customs documentation. Without it, customs authorities will not process the shipment. Your goods will be held at the port until the code is produced – and in some cases, the shipment may be returned or penalised.

Banks Will Not Process Foreign Remittances

When you receive payment from a foreign buyer or make a payment to a foreign supplier, your bank is required by RBI regulations to reference your IE Code against the transaction. Without a valid IE Code, your bank will refuse to process international wire transfers related to trade, leaving you unable to receive or make payments for cross-border transactions.

Export Incentive Schemes Require It

Almost every government export promotion scheme – including the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP), Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS), duty drawback claims, and APEDA or FIEO registrations – requires a valid IE Code as a prerequisite. Without it, you are ineligible for the financial benefits the government offers to encourage exports.

It Establishes Your Credibility as a Legitimate Trader

Foreign buyers and international trading partners – particularly those from Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia – conduct due diligence before entering into trade relationships. A business that holds a valid IE Code signals to them that it is a registered, legally compliant Indian entity. This credibility is often the deciding factor in whether a foreign buyer places their first order with you.

E-Commerce Exports Require It Too

If you are selling on international e-commerce platforms – Amazon Global Selling, Etsy, eBay, or your own website – you need an IE Code to legally export your products. Platforms also increasingly require exporters to provide IE Code details as part of their seller verification and compliance checks.

Documents Required for IE Code Registration

The IE Code application is filed online through the DGFT portal. The documentation required is straightforward – but accuracy in every detail is essential, since the IE Code is linked to your PAN and bank account, and any mismatch causes delays.

PAN Card of the applicant – individual PAN for proprietors, entity PAN for companies, LLPs, and firms

• Aadhaar Card of the proprietor, partner, or authorised director – for identity verification

• Passport-size photograph of the applicant

• Cancelled cheque or bank certificate – showing the business bank account name, account number, and IFSC code

• Address proof of the business – utility bill, rent agreement, or GST registration certificate

• Certificate of Incorporation – for companies and LLPs

• Partnership Deed – for partnership firms

• Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) – for companies and LLPs filing through a director or partner

All documents must be current, legible, and consistent with each other. The name on the PAN, the bank account, and the incorporation documents must match exactly. A discrepancy, even a spelling variation, between the PAN name and the bank account name is one of the most common reasons IE Code applications are rejected or put on hold.

The IE Code Registration Process

IE Code registration is done entirely online through the DGFT portal at dgft.gov.in. The process is centrally managed by DGFT and is one of the more straightforward government registrations – provided your documents are in order from the start.

1. Create a login on the DGFT portal using your business email ID and mobile number. Companies and LLPs register using their Director Identification Number (DIN) and DSC.

2.
Navigate to the IE Code application section and fill in the online form with your business details – entity name, PAN, business address, bank account details, and nature of business.

3.
Upload all required supporting documents in the prescribed format and size. Every document must be clearly legible and match the details entered in the form.

4.
Pay the government fee of Rs. 500 online through the DGFT payment gateway.

5.
Submit the application. DGFT reviews the application and verifies the details – particularly the PAN and bank account information – against their records.

Upon successful verification, the IE Code is issued digitally. For complete and accurate applications, this typically happens within 1 to 3 working days.

Modifying Your IE Code - When and Why

Since the IE Code is a lifetime registration, the details linked to it need to be kept updated as your business evolves. DGFT allows IE Code holders to modify their registered details through the same DGFT portal when any of the following changes occur:

Change in business address – if your registered office or operational address changes

• Change in bank account – if the business switches its primary bank or account

Addition of new branch offices or factory units to the IE Code

• Change in the name of the business – due to rebranding, restructuring, or legal name change

Change in directors or partners – when leadership changes in a company or firm

Change in the nature or category of goods being exported or imported

Keeping your IE Code details current is not just a good practice – it is a compliance requirement. An IE Code with outdated address or bank details can create problems during customs clearance, foreign remittance processing, and benefit claim filings. Modifications can be done online through the DGFT portal with the updated supporting documents.

Common Mistakes in IE Code Registration

PAN-bank account name mismatch – the single most common reason for application delays. The name on the cancelled cheque must exactly match the PAN card name

• Filing under the wrong entity type – registering as an individual when the business is a private limited company, or vice versa

• Uploading blurry or cropped documents – DGFT requires clearly legible, complete scans of all documents

• Using a personal bank account instead of the business bank account for the registration

• Not updating the IE Code after a change in bank account or address – creating a mismatch between live records and DGFT data

• Applying for a new IE Code when one already exists – each PAN can hold only one IE Code. If you already have one, you need to update it, not apply fresh.

IE Code and Other Export Registrations - How They Connect

The IE Code is the foundation – but it is only the beginning of your export compliance stack. Most other export-related registrations and certifications either require the IE Code as a prerequisite or reference it in their application process.

ICEGATE Registration – requires a valid IE Code to file shipping bills and interact with customs electronically

AD Code Registration – requires IE Code details when registering with your bank and the customs port

APEDA Registration – mandatory for agricultural exporters; IE Code is a required field in the application

RCMC from Export Promotion Councils – IE Code is required to apply for Registration Cum Membership Certificate

FIEO Membership – IE Code is a prerequisite for joining the Federation of Indian Export Organisations

Commodity Board Registrations (Spice Board, Coffee Board, Tea Board, etc.) – all require a valid IE Code

GST LUT Filing – exporters must quote their IE Code when filing the Letter of Undertaking for zero-rated exports

Getting your IE Code right – with correct details and clean documentation – sets the foundation for all subsequent export registrations. Any error in the IE Code ripples through every other registration that references it.
