EPR stands for Extended Producer Responsibility, it’s a principle in which the manufacturer or producer of a product is responsible for its entire lifecycle, including its disposal. In the context of India, the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme is a policy framework that aims to reduce the environmental impact of products by making the manufacturers or producers responsible for their waste management and disposal.

EPR is a principle that has been incorporated into the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, under the Environmental Protection Act, 1986. Under this principle, the manufacturers or producers of certain products are required to take responsibility for the waste generated by their products and to ensure that it is collected and disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.

This scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in India. The EPR scheme applies to a wide range of products, including packaging materials, electronic and electrical equipment, batteries, and other products that have a significant environmental impact.
